MINI BLOG      ISSUE # 4

..BACK TO BIKES..

The run to Parksville to pay homage to Big Red

(I'm choking & gagging here  -  explanation to follow later )

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fellas met at 10 (at the end of the driveway) for a rip up to Parksville. The goal was a coffee @ Timmy Ho's. John & Gary would be coming down from Campbel River for - what else ?- a coffee. (I do believe a concession occurred here - I suspect these gents are Starbucks's guys)

( I've had an ordeal wrestling with Blogspot/Google/Dropbox, and have given up trying to upload videos. So, instead, I've inserted a link(s) for video viewing. This link doesn't work in 'draft', so I can't test it until posted. If it doesn't work: go to youtube, search"olddogonahog" , when the list of vids comes up, then go to top where there is a picture of no picture, & click 'olddogonahog' - it's blue.
The vids are numbered and captionned 'parksville 13/6/8'. There are also previous blog vids that live here ..)

The photos below are at the 1st Timmy's stop @ Langford  -  just a mere 25 km from Sooke. Imagine,
a break after 25 km  !!   And how is it that when S. Bob (sweetie) orders a breakfast sandwhich, he's always served 2 ???

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------Up and over the Hat"...........that's the Malahat, a famous road, or infamous, that, while paling to insignifigance compared to Mainland mountain passes such as the Bonanza, or Kicking Horse, causes consternation in us Island residents. ( My Aunt tells tales of my grandmother talking of the 'hat from 1922. )

Rob's little 250 was just a shreeking up the 'hat , wound out, no doubt, to 5 digits on the tach. That's a lotta rev's for a 240 cc mil...........In fact, abuse of machinery ??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next stop was the Mill Bay rest area ( 25 km up the road ??) and then on to Cassidy, for another rest stop .(another 25 km ??)

Now, if I may, I ask that you refer to mini-blog number 3, picture only, and then allow me to draw your attention to the blue bike in the bachground when the 2 R's (the 240 was winded) pull in to Cassidy (vid #3).
That's a restored '82 Yamaha 650 Maxim. Mini-blog 3 is a '82 Yamaha 920 Virago. The Gen Y son has an '82 Honda 750 Magna.
....hey, there's something happening here...

Cassidy

....and watch vid #3....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No respite from Cassidy all the way to Parksville, so next stop was where we met up with John & Gary at Timmy's Ho. John was fully decked out (jacket/chaps) so thankfully no 'tats were visible. However, that nasty little pony tail was flappin in the wind. It should be tucked up out of the way in a skull cap..

( Al was awfully close to a pony tail 'til the military barber got a hold of him - see vid 3)

                                John..

Hard to see , but check the Merlot Heritage...awesome bike. Gary's.

Rich & Gary. Al seems reluctant to remove his hat ????

                               the 2 R's.

This is what's its name .........right, Big Red !

Geeeez, ........... just 1 day, (24 hours)  after the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes, when, 4 decades ago to the day (plus 1 day),  the real Big Red  set the racing world on fire with 1 1/2 miles @ 2:24 ( & 31 lengths), and achieved immortality................. I take pictures of this ??
It ain't even big - the new ones are 103 cubic inches, not a mere 96............
(FYI , Turcotte's personalized licence plate reads:   BIG RED 2 )
(Further FYI: Man of War, Seabiscut's  dad , was the original  BIG RED ...........)

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watch vid 5)    ...... where  Big Red makes a feable attempt to justify his moniker ....

The beach at Parksville (not Rathtrevor)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two Timmy Ho stops on the way back down to Sooke. Much coffee swilling..... used to be beer swilling .   What happened ??

Ladysmith

Richard almost got ........sidetracked (?)   around the Coble Hill area   -    but we won't go there...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hale, you feel'in a bit out to sea ?  I can't include you when you you ain't here......
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  2. I can't keep holding up this blog thing all by myself. Get out & do something worth writing about. Even a blogger needs something to read on occasion.
